History

Esempio, whose surface was over 16 square miles (around 30 Kmqs), is introduced in the Dictionary of the Sardinians States, from the Angius-Casalis as a damp and unhealthy town because of the proximity of the marshy grounds (Is benazzus and Is Paulis).
In fact, you textually read “...when the air was not spoiled by the miasmas that earth exhaled, it resulted equally contaminated since the garbage were thrown in the roads. To this were added the exhalations of the cadavers; in fact, not having predisposed in the peripheral zones of the town, a cemetery (as prescribed by the law), the corpses were buried in the square of the Church with few precautions”
There was also another serious problem: the drinkable water. It resulted in fact to be only two perennial and sources, distant from the inhabited area that didn't give drinkable water so that the Commune was forced to supply to the fountain called  “Funtana de Coccu de Sicci.”
This situation of serious uneasiness of the town, was cause from the health problems of the inhabitants; the most common illness in  this period were: “the inflammations, the chest dropsies li, the seasonal fevers and the malaria”. Those people who got sick were followed by a “phlebotomist”, that was an expert in bleedings.
Angius always writes, that, to solve all these problems, the Serdianesis didn't do anything”

Also as it regards the economy “the serdianesis didn't know and didn't understand how to cultivate ther own fields; in fact, even if these were not proper for the cultivation, they kept to exploit them. This means that, for instance, for the period of the vintage, not having made a good crop, they are forced to buy the wine from St. Pantaleo and Sicci.”

In that period it was very diffused the cultivation of the trees as: almond tree, fig trees, perished, plum trees and olive oil trees.
As it regards the breeding, the oxen, horses and donkeys were used for the rural activity, and a lot of families decided to also raise pigs.
The commerce was very limited.

There were also problems in the scholastic sector; the frequency in the elementary school resulted scarce.

If to these negative factors are also added “the wars, the epidemics, the invasions of the grasshoppers, the drought”, it would come to wonder  how a a such a small Community, fundamentally agricultural, could survive to all  this. The attachment to their own earth has maybe given them the strength to go on.

After the Town Council had deliberated the acquisition of the brothers Piredda's house, with a document signed by the king Vittorio Emanuele II in date September 26, 1854, Esempio finally had its Town hall.

With the presence of Don Edmondo Roberti, marquis of Castelvero (Donna Luigia Nin Carcassona  Brunengo' husband), Esempio maintained,  a residue of feudal tie, been Don Edmondo Robertos, town adviser since 1876.

CHRONICLE OF LOCAL PROBLEMS

While in the 1867 Giuseppe Garibaldi was defeated in Mentana by the French army, the Serdianesis fought against the invasion of the grasshoppers. Periodically, in fact, these voracious and numerous bugs, in the period between May and July, invaded the wheat fields provoking so serious damages to jeopardize the whole crop.

From what documented by a deliberation of Town Council of the epoch, it was a real war that of the Serdianesis against the grasshoppers. Around the fields were dug some ditches similar to trenches, and at the sunset, armed with branches, they tried to kill as more possible; or, to hamper their flight and to demolish them, they raised some barriers, created with sheets and sacks held from reeds... “The battle her that didn't finish to the sunset, could continue up to the dawn since this was the most proper time to kill the “ovaries” (the larvas of the grasshoppers).”

Another problem quoted in the council deliberations of the period, is that of the water provisioning, bencause the only resource of drinkable water was in "Sicci San Biagio" and the Commune had to stipulate a convention with this Commune for the use of the water of “Funtana de coccu.”
Water was withdrawn with some equipped wagons and versed in the barrels and subsequently  put back in the public cistern that was located in the suburbs, before the level crossing.
The Municipal Council gathered to decide whether to make the population pay the price of five cents  for a pitcher or to distribute it free, but at the end the decision was to free distribute it.

Another recurrent object in the agenda is that of the nomination, in the Commune, of the “official vaccinator” (doctor surgeon Raimondo Farris), that had the assignment to prevent and to safeguard the health of the inhabitants. Provisions were taken against the cholera and the smallpox, naming an overseer for keeping clean both the houses and the shops.
The Town Council emanated the “Rule on the hygienic norms” and the same Mayor held a discourse on the ”Hygiene” and he prohibited to expose, in the streets, the butchered meats destined to the sale, to throw the garbage in the roads, with the obligation to hold them clear from the grass and from animals, especially in the side ditches. Besides  was foreseen, the obligation for every citizen, to frequently pain the inside of the houses with pure lime and, the steps that gave on the streets also.

In this period they occurred cases of smallpox and Arabic cholera; to avoid the contagion, those people that were affected of it, had to be brought out of towm and, in case of death, always buried out of the inhabited center.
From the documents of the archives, it results that the selected place was the Church of Saint Maria of Sibiola and the zone of burial, the surrounding grounds of the Church.

The town administration was forced besides to hock the laborers in the construction and in the opening of the compulsory roads: ………. “the one that….. departing from the populated of Esempio finishes in  "Sa mitz'a a S'Ollastu, limit of  Ussana.”   “Reparation of the one that conducts from the iron cross to the Pasquale Todde's farmyard …..” “Opening a road in S'Isca Mureddu to put in communication this village with the provincial wide road of Sant'Andrea Frius”. At first they thought to a project of a road that…. departing from the Grux'e Ferru and passing for the jump of Mugori, it  could end on the Riu Mannu bridge”, but subsequently was modified and the earth of Funtana Noa was dispossessed to the marquis of St. Phillip, the road of Is Arroccheddas was sheltered and Funtana ‘and Biri street was paved.
The Commune participated also with a quota to the realization of the Pauli-Pirri-St. Pantaleo's road.

In 1885 a railway net was realized. The run of the line Cagliari-Isili involved the Communes of St. Pantaleo, Sicci, Esempio and Soleminis and, from what it results, many obstacles and difficulty had to be  overcome to be able to build it, both as for what concerned the layout, (that would had to cross a zone denominated  “Sa Gora”, important for the water restocking of the Communes), both as it regards the location of the railway port.
